ACC WEBSITE HEADLINES October 2008, Vol. 1, Article 1
“ACC Website Sports New Look” by Jim Roberts and Norm Plummer
The purposes of the ACC Website are to display our images, to inform our members, and to share information that will help our members improve their photographic skills. We sincerely hope that all of our Club members will contribute images for display on the website. The Arlington Camera Club website “Home Page” was first displayed on the internet in 2002 by Bill Kruser. A basic format for that page was available from “GeoCities” (a company now owned by Yahoo). The following year, Ken Olsen added a few content pages, and in 2004, galleries of our winning competition images. He used the “Microsoft Front Page” web development program. Since that time there have been many advances in web technology and software tools. In 2005 we began using “Adobe GoLive” to expand and improve the website. Our new generation website has now migrated to “Adobe Dreamweaver”, considered the industry standard by many developers. Through “Dreamweaver” and writing customized code in style sheets, it is easier to make changes in the website enabling more continuity in style across all pages. A modern style and graphics enhancements will be incorporated in the website as this year progresses. The new ACC Website that you are now viewing is a “Beta” (test) version that will be up until December of 2008. There is much work yet to be done and we invite all members to preview this site and let us know of needed corrections to the site’s operation and the content. Your suggestions for new features are also very welcome. Please contact Jim Roberts by e-mail: Webmaster@arlingtoncameraclub.org Last Spring our Website Committee met to discuss ideas for improvement of the website. The following GOALS were set: Fresh graphics, new logo, contemporary style and structure, centered page presentations, easy to access features (less clicks) and drop-down menus. Websites may display differently depending on what browser you are using. Specific articles from back issues of the ACC Newsletter, “Through the Lens”, will be excerpted and presented separately from the Newsletter (avoiding the need for readers to scroll to an article within a Newsletter). Where possible, we ask that members and presenters provide articles for our website in digital format. In addition, a number of new features will be added to the website: Monthly “Headline Articles” with an articles archive; “New Member Profiles” with headshots; “Theme Galleries”; a page for answers to frequently asked questions – “FAQ’s”; Nathan Silver’s “Digital 101” photography class information; and a “Site Map”. Modern websites are also interactive. We are working on an “Internet Photo Critique” process, a “Photography Blog”, and a “Member Upload Gallery” process. Special thanks goes out to Linda Romanow for her creative work on the new page graphics and the ACC logo, to Kent Wilson for sorting out the “page centering” issue, and to Norm Plummer for creating the style sheet code, page format, scripts, and drop-down menu code. Also on the Website Committee: Mike Berner, Ed Martin, and Jim Beck, have been very helpful with their suggestions and oversight of the website as it rolls out. We look forward to working with our new members: John Kinyon, Sam Krizan, Dave Lomblad, Jack Oberhart, and Phillip Ruiz, who have also volunteered to help with the website this year. We’ll be contacting you soon! We are very pleased that this has been a collaborative “Team” effort in developing the new website. We look forward to continued involvement and content contributions by Club members. A much worthy example is Kent Wilson’s display of the Club’s Indiana Covered Bridges shoot held last fall (click here). Enjoy!
